Carnelian Tumbled
A set of three tumbled carnelian stones — smooth, warm, and immediately recognisable by the orange-to-red tones that range from pale tangerine to deep rust depending on the piece. Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) coloured by iron oxide impurities. The colour is not surface treatment — it runs through the stone.
Carnelian was one of the first stones used in jewellery and amulets. Egyptian tomb excavations consistently find carnelian among the grave goods — the Egyptians associated its red-orange warmth with the setting sun, and with the goddess Isis. Medieval Europeans used it for signet rings and wax seals because hot wax does not stick to it.
Tumbled carnelian is the most pocketable of stones. The rounded form has no edges, is warm to the touch, and the colour shifts under different light — cooler and more orange indoors, warmer and more red in direct sun.
